Thomas Massie (R) KY-4 is at it again doing his best to save the nation from those he deems to be wasteful spenders and apparently personal enemies. This is Thomas Massie writing on X yesterday:
“Let’s pause to remember this moment in Congress when Mike Johnson gave the Democrats the billions of dollars they wanted for Ukraine. The House Sergeant at Arms threatened to fine me for sharing this video. That same man still works for Mike Johnson."
AND THIS is also Thomas Massie yesterday:
“I respect and support President Trump, but his endorsement of Mike Johnson is going to work out about as well as his endorsement of Speaker Paul Ryan. We’ve seen Johnson partner with the democrats to send money to Ukraine, authorize spying on Americans, and blow the budget.”
AND THIS is Thomas being the duplicitous Thomas that he can be:
“Republican Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie told reporters Wednesday that he will not be supporting Speaker of the House Mike Johnson’s bid for another term as speaker.
“I’ll vote for somebody else,” Massie told Politico on Wednesday. “I’ve got a few in mind. I’m not going to say yet.”
All of this was prompted by President Trump’s whole hearted endorsement of Rep. Johnson for another term as speaker — checking a box that is sorely needed to ensure that he can hit the ground running with a slim majority in the House against a continuing hostile Democrat minority that has no desire to help the President Make America Great Again.
I want to point out two things very quickly.
First, Mr. Massie has has no problem seeking Donald Trump endorsement in the past and I am certain that he will seek it in the future. Mr. Massie is not a very good political ally. NOR is representing the wishes of the majority of his constituents who want President Trump to get on with the business of house cleaning.
Second, Mr. Massie is not the fiscal hawk he would have you believe he is. Why do I say this? Because in the 4th quarter of FY 23 Massie spent about $60,000 more than in any of the prior three quarters. On what you ask? Well, on staff bonuses, of course.
Here is the February 2, 2024 edition of the cleverly named Larry’s Letters in which I explain that Mr. Massie’s fiscal hawkishness apparently doesn’t apply to how he runs his office and spends his constituents money.
THIS is my hat. I wear everywhere almost everyday.
“GREATNESS OVER GRIDLOCK” is the guiding principal of our Founders. They gave us a Constitution designed to achieve GREATNESS. Mr. Massie needs to decide if he wants a nation that achieves greatness or one that is frozen in time over an issue of his own creation.
I ended “CHRISTMAS IN JULY——” with this:
“IF Thomas Massie (and others) wants true credibility as a Budget Hawk and a member of the Freedom Caucus then he needs to start showing us by managing his own house in a way that matches his rhetoric. Otherwise he’s just one more swamp dweller.
“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew (The Tax Collector) 6:1”
It is no less true today.
Sorry to disagree w/some of this--I think Massie brings up the very same issues I have had with Johnson. The very first thing Johnson did was send more money to Ukraine. WTF? And then he supported spying on Americans, especially when that authority has been abused against conservatives. IDK if anyone better than Johnson exists but I wish more reps would call out Johnson like Massie does. I agree w/you regarding bonuses to his staff but then again, how much does his staff make vs. other congressional staff? If he paid bonus to stay competitive, then why cut off his own nose to spite his face?
Still, we need people like Massie. The greatest fault of progressivism, and it has a multitude of grave faults, is that every progressive is expected to go along. Just go along. Have no thoughts of their own.
Let's not be like that. Trump plays politics. he has to. Johnson plays politics. He has to. Well, Massie has to play politics. There is no easy answer to the Middle East. The US government has done as much to make things worse there than to make them better. Massie wants us out of there. I see his point, even if I don't wholeheartedly agree. I have similar sentiments about Ukraine.
My basic view is that we need a lot more Massies. We are in the messes we are in as a direct result of people going along. That never ends well.
