I have been writing science policy professionally for almost 50 years. For a good part of that time I had staff available to do the word processing and others to do the editing and formatting. Those were people whom I thanked God for every day — though I would prefer that you not share that with my various editors with whom the process often involved great weeping and gnashing of teeth and episodic elevations in blood pressure. And now I am that word processor and unfortunately for my readers, I am my own editor as well.
Being one’s own editor is akin to representing yourself in a court of law where the well known aphorism applies: “A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client.” Being your own editor is no different.
The piece, Censors and Cowards, is an example of the perils of self-editing. The version that currently appears has finally ( I hope) become suitable for human consumption.
Thank you for your patience.
