This banner was commissioned by George Washington in 1775. The Appeal to Heaven banner would be flown on the masts of six cruisers built in secret by Washington in preparation for a likely war against Great Britain. The phrase “Appeal To Heaven” was originally penned by the political philosopher, John Locke, in 1689:
“What is my Remedy against a Robber, that so broke into my House? Appeal to the Law for Justice. But perhaps Justice is denied, or I am crippled and cannot stir, robbed and have not the means to do it. If God has taken away all means of seeking remedy, there is nothing left but patience. But my Son, when able, may seek the Relief of the Law, which I am denied: He or his Son may renew his Appeal, till he recover his Right. But the Conquered, or their Children, have no Court, no Arbitrator on Earth to appeal to. Then they may appeal, as Jephtha did, to Heaven, and repeat their Appeal, till they have recovered the native Right of their Ancestors, which was to have such a Legislative over them, as the Majority should approve, and freely acquiesce in.”
Today we might write: When things go south there is always God and when government fails us the correct response is turn to God. After all, God is the Creator and, therefore, the ultimate authority. In fact, God has made it clear how we are to behave in response to a secular Government:
“Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.”-- Matthew 22:21
In the time that Christ was on Earth, Caesar was the ruler of the secular world; a world of laws and traditions and expectations created by man. But God? God created everything. Including our rights to be free and to live in a just world. John Locke and our Founders understood this. If they hadn’t believed that God was the Creator and Lord holding dominion over our lives — they never would have written and agreed to these words:
“We hold these Truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal, that are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” - Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776
This is a phrase that the left hates because it limits the authority of government to what the People say it can do. We have lost sight of that and we ceded that authority to our government and we have done that by not exercising our obligations as citizens to act as the government and to understand that our actions must be “Godly” in nature.
When we ignore God’s primacy our application of man’s law becomes perverted to extent that the relationship between the government and the governed is turned on its head and government assumes all authority and God is banned.
In 1830 in a speech to the US Senate Daniel Webster warned us:
It is the people’s Constitution, the people’s government, made for the people, made by the people, and answerable to the people. The people of the United States have declared that this Constitution shall be the supreme law. We must either admit the proposition, or dispute their authority. The States are, unquestionably, sovereign, so far as their sovereignty is not affected by this supreme law. But the State legislatures, as political bodies, however sovereign, are yet not sovereign over the people.
In the Manhattan District of New York City, and in Fulton County, Georgia the local authorities have prostituted the law in order to fulfill campaign rhetoric in these substantially democrat strongholds in order to see that former President Donald Trump has been crippled in his effort to regain the Oval Office. This has been done by men and women who find, as does Barack Obama and Joe Biden, that the U.S. Constitution and God are obstacles in their quest for power.
So what is our proper response?
Our proper response is to Appeal to Heaven.
Lori Colley is my favorite author on Substack. Her offering today is an excellent summary of the reaction to yesterdays guilty verdict concerning New York v. Trump. She concludes with this:
“President Trump will hold a press conference at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.
Why this Matters: Good things happen when anger propels us towards positive action. The Left has only just begun to feel the backlash. As Rep. Perry reminds us, “If they can manufacture the crime to fit the man, guess what? You’re next.”
Our preference for polished politicians and niceties over mean tweets and tough governance got us into this mess. Only our determination to push back against a rogue government will get us out.
How to Pray: Ask God what he would have you do to take this country back. At the very minimum, we must vote in November as though our freedom depends on it, because it does. Pray for national repentance, that we might become a people who deserve better leadership.
I Sam. 12:14-15 - If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigns over you continue following the LORD your God: But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.”
A final word.
Our Constitution is clear. The power resides in the governed; that’s us. WE are Caesar. This makes the United States unique among nations. In no other nation now or in the past have the People been both the governed and the government. But here is our problem. We have abrogated our obligations, duties, and responsibilities to govern as “one nation under God”.
Here is my prayer:
Our Father; God our Creator guide us in our efforts to restore this Nation to that which you would have it be. Let our restoration be purposeful and peaceful. As we prepare to vote in November cause us to be informed and deliberate so that we vote wisely using your teachings to guide us.

Right on, Brother Lawrence! I’ve been saying for years now in response to those who claim that we, as Christians, are to bow in obedience to everything our government mandates or risk being at odds with God Himself - “We have no Caesar in the USA - We The People are the final authority under God our Maker. It is our right and responsibility to hold ourselves and also our elected officials accountable to God’s Kingdom ways as revealed in His word.
“Yes !” and “Amen!” to all you have written here. May it be published far and wide.
