Once again it’s Mask debate season. We use to call this “cold and flu” season but apparently the common cold and the routine influenza out breaks have been replaced by SARS-CoV-2 Variant ______ (fill in the blank) Season. While we know that there are SARS-CoV-2 variants lurking in the air waiting for unsuspecting non-mask wearing, anti-vaxers to walk into a cloud of that SARS-CoV-2 Variant _____, we have no clue as to what that variant will be now or in the future which should complicate Joe Biden’s assertion that next year we will have a “better vaccine” that EVERYONE vaxed or unwaxed will get but it won’t because HE will follow THE SCIENCE and that science is akin to the word of God. Exactly what that science is - is a complete mystery to me because it is crafted by policy wonks in the White House basement and reviewed by pseudoscientists at the alphabet public health agencies to make the absurd barely plausible. Enter THE MASK.
Here is a mask and its wearer
And here is another mask
Neither of these masks are mandated to be worn to protect against the SARS-CoV-2 Variant _____. Why? Because they have great big openings that allow viruses, chunks of dirt and flies to go through.
But this mask has supernatural powers, perhaps because its blue and worn by surgeons and nurses and other surgery staff (thus the name surgical mask) and because we are told that it stops pandemics of the SARS-CoV-2 _______ Variant.
Except it doesn’t. According to the manufacturer (not an endorsement — it just popped up on my screen during a search) of this particular brand it will protect the wearer during any “procedure involving moderate to heavy levels of aerosol spray and moisture. Made from non-woven fabric the outer layer for maximum protection against moisture.”
Notice what word is missing from this description — “virus”. Why? Because this manufacture as do all the other manufactures of the blue (insert your favorite color) surgical mask AND THEIR LAWYERS know that these things do not stop a virus particle from entering your breathing zone. ← Period.
Just to be clear these masks are effective against big, gloppy, wet stuff coming from a persons mouth or nose. Also just to be clear again the wearer has to be pretty darn close to the producer of the big, gloppy, wet stuff coming from another persons nose of mouth in order to need such a mask. And THAT, boys and girls, is why they have been known for decades as surgical masks because they were worn by surgical staff to protect patients from being exposed to big, gloppy, wet stuff coming from the noses or mouths of a surgeon and his or her surgical team while you’re on the operating table with an open wound.
That’s it. That’s their purpose.
But can they protect you if you’re around your uncle Fred when has COVID and is symptomatic (i.e. producing big, gloppy, wet stuff from his nose and mouth)? Maybe. Maybe if you get really close to him while he’s coughing or sneezing.
Am I the only one who understands this — of course not. The entire staff of National Institute for Occupational Safety Health, a CDC agency, the entire staff of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, any industrial hygienist worth their salt, any industrial respirator OR surgical mask manufacturer AND THEIR LAWYERS all know this too.
Tony Two Masks seems to be the only person who still has doubts or confusion on this issue.
In an interview with CNN on Saturday, Dr. Fauci was asked about a review published in late January at the Cochrane Library, which said there was no evidence to prove the spread of COVID-19 infection could be reduced by the use of face masks. Dr. Fauci admitted that “when you're talking about the effect on the epidemic or the pandemic as a whole, the data are less strong.”
But he then went on to insist that when talking “as an individual basis of someone protecting themselves or protecting themselves from spreading it to others, there's no doubt that there are many studies that show that there is an advantage.”
Let me just offer this bit of commentary. This last statement by Fauci — is pure fiction. There are no such studies. Why? Because such studies are impossible to do. It is impossible to know if a mask protected a person from contracting COVID or not. And that, folks, is the REAL SCIENCE
So who do we believe? Tony Two Masks or the rest of the world. I’ve cast my vote.
