At the Oasis of Hope there are two stories. The first describes advancements in the dendritic cell vaccine production that allows a more targeted, potent, easily administered vaccine that promises to more effectively treat a wide variety of cancers and dramatically reduce patient cost.
The second story is yet to be written in its entirety. It begins with why people from all over the world searching for alternative cancer treatment arrive at the Oasis of Hope Hospital.
That second tale is written in a series of case studies of people misdiagnosed or denied timely treatment because of insurance company demands for pointless tests before they will pay for the highly diagnostic PET scan. It is a story woven by misread imaging, bizarre diagnosis, unnecessary treatments and surgeries, insistence by oncologists that the “standard of care” treatment of surgery, chemotherapy, and surgery be immediately started. And there are also pronouncements by physicians that nothing more can be done other than to go home and die quietly with your family.
Unlike the first story where hope is offered, the second story tells of people from Maine to Hawaii, Canada to Florida, and Africa to Korea robbed of hope.
There is a third story. And it is the one that is the most uplifting both individually and collectively. It is the tale of the triumph of the human spirit in a house of spiritual and medical healing written by people of great courage and faith in the power of God to heal.
It is an honor to be in their presence and to hear their stories.
