Intellectually I understand, yet I still don't get it. What causes a person to be so dedicated to their herd mentality that they will ignore obvious facts in favor of believing what their 'influencers' tell them?

Psychologists have demonstrated that many people will believe what the crowd believes, even when it is plainly obvious that the crowd is factually incorrect. The need to 'belong' is that strong, in some people.

We laugh at 'flat-earthers'. There is no evidence, no proof that they won't refute in order to maintain their foolish belief that the earth is flat. I wonder how many flat-earthers are progressives...
